what does it mean to be male?
The Times today has an article called "wimpy Christians urged to become macho male". It focuses on John Eldredge's book "Wild at Heart". which declares "A battle to fight. An adventure to live. A beauty to rescue. This is what a man longs for. This is what makes him come alive. There is something fierce, passionate and wild in the heart of every man." no mention of sex then. Oh and by the way true maleness is found in characters like Henry V and William Wallace. I am not so sure about this "deep and holy goodness of masculine aggression." he talks about. maybe I should read the book or wait for the wild at heart weekend experience! on a plus he may have a point about some church leaders in the good old c of e discovering a wild side and embracing risk....

I ache to be part of a church that is mission rather than a church which does mission.

bad-ass church
had an interesting conversation at the fountain on Sunday night. We all had the opportunity to write down our key word for doing church from scratch. perhaps not surprisingly inclusion, community, friendship and fellowship featured heavily.

touching the void
Two twenty-something mountain climbers descending one of the world's highest peaks face the ultimate tragedy in this stunning true story from Oscar®-winning director Kevin MacDonald.
Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and the men were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, had not been climbed before. Following a successful 3-day ascent, disaster struck. Simpson fell a short distance and broke several bones in his leg. With no hope of rescue, the men decided to attempt descent together with Yates lowering Simpson 300 feet at a time in a slow, painful process that could have potentially been deadly for both. One further misstep led to Yates unknowingly lowering his injured partner over the lip of a crevasse. With the gradient having gone from steep to vertical, he was no longer able to hold on. Certain they were about to be pulled jointly to their deaths -- the only choice was to cut the rope.
watched this last night with Lucy. Amazed at their courage and determination to keep going, even with broken bones! Amazed at the strength of their friendship and trust and respect.

The fountain is an alternative worship gathering.
In the first half of 2005 we are meeting monthly
either
to explore our faith, through conversation in a relaxed and contemporary format, and to have a drink
Or
to explore our faith, through reflection and meditative acts of worship in a variety of sacred spaces
On Sunday 23rd January we invite to join us in our conversation as we explore the theme - “church from scratch” at the Fountain Inn, Westgate St Gloucester. We meet in the bar from 8pm, aiming to finish by 9.30.

brothers in arms
everfelt too wounded to carry on? was talking to a friend today who was ready to quit church. why is church so wounding? why does it leave people so bruised and confused? do we expect too much from it and each other? Glad I am not alone (although it feels like a lot at the moment). I'm gald that I have people who will hold me and I'm glad that I have decided not to leave the fight. The great physician is healing me and I keep on keeping on in his strength.
